Avoiding Slips & Falls: Winter Safety Tips

Winter is here, bringing colder temperatures, ice, snow, and a higher risk of slips and falls. Icy sidewalks, frozen walkways, and snow-covered paths can turn a simple outing into a potential hazard. To help you avoid accidents, we’ve compiled these winter safety tips to keep you upright and healthy all season long.

1. Wear Proper Footwear
Choosing the right footwear is crucial to staying safe on slippery surfaces. Wear shoes or boots with non-slip soles that provide good traction, and avoid smooth-soled shoes or high heels that can increase the risk of slipping.


2. Use Salt or Sand
Salt and sand help break down ice and provide better grip for safe walking. In public spaces, look for areas that have been treated with salt or sand, as these surfaces will offer better traction. At home, you can salt your driveway, sidewalks, and walkways. If you’re unable to salt your path yourself, consider asking a friend, family member, or local service provider for help.


3. Don’t Rush!
In icy conditions, it’s essential to take your time when walking. Slow down, take smaller steps, and keep your center of gravity over your feet to minimize the risk of losing balance. If you use a cane or walker, make sure the rubber tips are in good condition.

6. Know What to Do in Case of a Fall
If you slip, try to avoid using your hands to break the fall, as this can lead to wrist or arm injuries. Instead, try to roll to one side and protect your head.
