Rabies Exposure

Rabies is a serious viral infection that can be fatal if not treated in time. If the animal that bit you is wild or unknown, or if you weren’t able to identify the animal, it’s important to talk to a healthcare provider as soon as possible. Rabies exposure may require a series of post-exposure rabies vaccinations to prevent the disease

When to seek emergency care:

The bite is Deep or large

You may need stiches

you were bitten by a wild animal

These animals carry diseases and parasites

The bite is on your face, hands, or joints

These areas have a higher risk of complications

you've never had a tetanus shot

The animal may have been in contact with bacteria from soil or a rusty object

you experience severe pain, bleeding, or difficulty moving the area

Possibility of infection or complications

the animal was acting aggressively or you suspect it was sick

Examples: foaming at the mouth or showing unusual behavior

you develop signs of infection

Redness, swelling, warmth, increased tenderness, pus or drainage, fever, chills, or increased pain
